There is a variety of "Bread Iyengars", from one particular taluk near Hassan in Karnataka. Holenarasipura, I think. The whole thing has something to do with Melkote Selvanarayana also.
@aand "bread iyengars"? and that too from karnataka? i thought iyengar was a purely tam term. dont they call it "smartha" and "madhwa" in karnataka? have only heard of the Melkote temple, not its connection with baking...
oh...how un informed u are..! iyengars form an integral part of karnataka. Melkote temple is the keystone for iyengars here. When mr.ramanujacharya established the temple, 3 kinds of iyengars were formed. Kelnat, the people staying below the hill, melnat, the ppl staying on the hill and the bread iyengars, the caterers. So that continued to form the iyengari bakery tradition!
